Duchess of Windsor. There were three things Wallis Simpson did very well -wearing expensive jewellery, making an entrance, and making an entrance wearing expensive jewellery. Simpson always used fashion as a weapon. She believed she was “not a beautiful woman”, and so she used fashion as a kind of armour – with her sense of style becoming more cutting-edge the more famous she became. Her jewellery collection included a 19-karat emerald and diamond ring commemorating her secret engagement with The Duke of Windsor (who abdicated his throne in order to marry the divorced Wallis) in 1936, inscribed with the words “We Are Ours Now.”
